Fedora 14 - "Sane Backends" intefering with Software Update

Running the Update Software utility from Fedora 14 was giving me some conflicts and error messages related to Sane Backends which has to do with scanning, digital cameras etc.

This looks to be Red Hat Bugzilla - 749083. The error messages look like



"Transaction error: could not add package update for
sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-5.fc14(i686)updates:
sane-backends-libs-1.0.22-5.fc14.i686".


 




The fix is easy


 




       sudo yum update --obsoletes


 






The explanation (from Bugzilla) is that "The problem was that sane-backends-libs-gphoto2


has been obsoleted by the new package sane-backends-drivers-cameras,


but it looks like Software Update didn't deal with this."

I could not get it to work, I get the error:
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit, remove-with-leaves
Adding en_US to language list

Trying other mirror.

Any suggestions on how to fix or a workaround?

Two things SteveF - Fedora 14 no longer really supported so the longer you stick with it probably the more issues you will run into. Secondly, try --disablerepo=fedora-gimp as option to yum?

Hitting something with a hammer often feels good but does nothing useful. Here's one case where it actually helps. On my 2004 Ford Explorer the alternator light came on. I brought it to the auto parts store and they put a volt meter on it. The alternator needs to put out a voltage that is higher than the battery's full charged voltage in order to properly function - somewhere in the 14 volt range. alternatives --install gets stuck: failed to read link: No such file or directory





















 Alternatives utility gets stuck doing install. Fedora 17 x86_64. Using SSH, SOCKS, tsocks, and proxy settings to create a simultaneous "dual use" work/home computer





















       The Problem:  Allow one linux workstation to be simultaneously used for both work and non-work purposes so that work and non-work traffic are segregated.
